Portland doctor Esther Choo responds to racism in the emergency room (Column)
Dr. Choo’s experiences about being refused by patients resonated with physicians of color who shared their own experiences with her in public and private messages.
“I guess that shouldn’t be surprising, but so much of medicine you’re alone by yourself with patients, and it doesn’t really occur to you that what you’re experiencing is a universal experience,” she said. “It’s been pretty amazing and affirming for me to see that I’m not alone in these experiences, they happen pretty regularly.”
